Why did I start a “100 days to a graphic designer” challenge

“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” – Theodore Roosevelt

If you study the biographies of successful people, you will find that it is not where they came from or started out that influenced their success but rather their habits and ways of thinking.  Success has a lot to do with self-determination, believing in yourself and in your team. Building skills for the future is not always easy and pleasant but it is in fact the most important.

I always had a need to be able to express myself. But I would often find explanation why I shouldn’t do so. As a kid I was too shy, as a teenager I had a huge fear of failing. Of course, growing up is a bitch some times. Once you got confidence in you and way more will power than you ever had, you have more important things to do than to pursue your dreams. In my case: to express myself through art, to leave my mark and to make something useful.

After landing a job and working at a company where I could spend all my life I understood it’s not all about safe decisions. At least not for me! I had to do something. Something that would allow me to use my imagination and release my creativity.

Unfortunately, I do not have the option to study at the university at this instance (even though I would love it) but I do believe that time is the essence.

Therefore, I choose not to be limited by my location nor am I waiting for better times. In fact, there are a few steps to educate yourself which I am willing to take.

Here are the steps I already took to build the skills I will need in the (hopefully near) Future.

“A dream becomes a goal when action is taken toward its achievement.”

– Bo Bennett

Online courses are a great way to learn a new skill relatively fast from the comfort of your own home. On the other hand it does need way more self-determination. No one will be there to tap on your shouder when you pick your phone up and do the “infinite scroll” through the social media feed. So be careful for the comfort of your own chosen location at your own chosen time not to get you!

Choosing your own way of learning might be tricky! Watching youtube tutorials all day is much easier than reading books. Especially if the material you are reading sounds like a foreign language. And even more so if it is a foreign language! But the truth is that reading boosts your vocabulary, improves memory, increases creativity and the ability to focus. Therefore, books are irreplaceable in learning process.
